Hearts & Hustkas – Donations being accepted until March 10
A Fundraiser in Support of Ukrainian Newcomers at Langham Court Theatre
UPDATE: This event is over but online donations are being accepted until March 10, 2023. Please see the link below.
February is the month of love and on Friday, February 17th at 7:00 pm, Langham Court Theatre and the Ukrainian community in Victoria will join together for a heartwarming cultural celebration and fundraiser to benefit Help Ukraine Vancouver Island Society (HUVI), a volunteer organization that has assisted more than 800 Ukrainians (mainly women and children) who have relocated to Vancouver Island after fleeing the dangers and trauma of the war in Ukraine.
Special entertainment for the evening will include the Veselka Dancers, Ballet Victoria, the Kalyna Choir, and the LUNA Ensemble. In addition, saxophonist Anton Serdiuk and trumpeter Eldar Talipov will perform, along with violinist Tatiana Kostour, who will be accompanied by pianist Iryna Graifer. Christine Chepyha will showcase the country’s national musical instrument, the bandura, which was historically played by minstrels who travelled from village to village singing ballads. All artists have generously donated their time and talents to the event, and a number of Ukrainian newcomers will be in attendance as special guests.
Tickets, which must be purchased in advance, are $55 per person, with 100% of the ticket proceeds going to help Ukrainian newcomers. The ticket includes a post-performance catered reception sponsored by Brentwood Bay Village Empourium, along with Ukrainian sweets such as Khrysyky (love knots) and Medivnyk (honey cake) baked by the Ukrainian community.
In addition, the event will feature a silent auction, and attendees will enjoy a rare glimpse into Ukrainian culture as they view a display of exquisite hand-crafted vintage costumes, along with Motanka dolls, a little-known Ukrainian tradition that symbolize prosperity, goodness and hope. Hustka or Kokum (Cree for grandmother) scarves will also be featured, representing the beautiful story of the historical connection between Ukrainian settlers and First Nations.
“Langham Court Theatre is honoured to partner with the Ukrainian community for this wonderful event and we look forward to welcoming many more collaborative community projects into the theatre in the future,” says Wayne Yercha, President of Langham Court Theatre.
